Connections
In my early days as a nature photographer, I picked up the idea from online forums and other resources that having a plan for every outing was the best way to create successful photographs. With time and practice, this approach instead resulted in me filling my mind with expectations and all kinds of preconceived ideas about what I hoped to photograph. I essentially had blinders on before I even got out of the car, which kept me from seeing all sorts of opportunities all around me. In some instances, I came home with photos similar to what I envisioned. Most the time, however, I ended up feeling frustrated because my ideas were not matching what nature actually offered up during my time outside. Feeling dissatisfied with this approach, I stopped planning my outings all together. Other than deciding on where to go and briefly considering the weather, I just started slowing down, wandering around, and being far more open-minded. I began seeing many more opportunities for photography and I let my curiosity, instead of pre-planned ideas, guide me. The photos in this portfolio are a result of this free-form process: going out without any ideas in mind and just seeing what subjects in nature spark a connection. When I feel that connection, I know it might be time to take out my camera and work on creating a photograph. Now, seeking these connections in the moment drives my work.
